Chapter 5

Today we finished an assignment on chapter 5 we got yesterday. I read the chapter which was interesting to see Gatsby and Daisy rekindle after 5 years. You could tell that Gatsby was trying hard to impress Daisy and make her happy in his house. I predict it will become a normal thing for Daisy to come over to Gatsby house as the book goes on. I completed my assignment on the discussion questions about the chapter and turned them in.

Posters

In our poster the picture represents the looks of Nick Caraway. We described him with traits that matched with our quotes in STEAL. In the book it says he dressed up white flannel which could represent he likes going against the ideal. Nick is a standoff type of person in the book but very blunt as well. Overall the poster represented how we felt Nick was throughout the chapters we have read so far.

Today in class we finished up our character projects. We started by getting our poster board and drawing. We then picked out some character traits that matched Nick the most. We said he was bold, trustworthy, honest, nonjudgmental. I filled out the STEAL parts then colored.

Thursday

On Thursday, we started our group projects on a character in The Great Gatsby. Our character was Nick, so my other classmate did a draft sketch of him and I worked on finding quotes for STEAL. I looked mostly in chapter 2 and 3 for good quotes mad by Nick. It was hard trying to find him describing his looks but I ended up with a quote of him telling how he was dressed up for Gatsby party. We didn’t get to the final sheet but we drafted everything we needed.

Monday

On Monday, we read pages 25-31 of The Great Gatsby book. Tom took Nick with him to see his other women and ended up visiting their apartment in New York. They had a small party in the apartment and Nick got overly drunk. I then did the assignment we were assigned to do. I compared and contrast George Wilson and Tom Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson and Daisy Buchanan.

Book assignment

Today in class we got in groups to read and discuss chapter three of The Great Gatsby. I read the chapter individually and thought of things to put down on my assignment. I was assigned to describe the settings being take place with the actions in the book. I started off with the beginning action of Nick observing the excitement going on in Gatsby’s house. I liked the assignment I got assigned to in my group.

Reading

In class we re-read pages of chapter 2 for the people who didn’t read the chapter. I read pages 20-24 and did an assignment on it while I read. The assignment was defining words, summarize what I read, make questions, analyze quotes, and make a connection with it. It was easy for me to connect with the concept of the valley of ashes because I feel I live in that sense most of the time. I completed my assignment and turned it in at the end of class.

Chapter 2

Today in class we read chapter 2 independently by ourselves or with a partner. We also had discussion questions to go along with it. In chapter 2 we got introduced to a few new characters that Tom knows. They introduced his mistress Mrs. Wilson who is oddly different from his wife daisy. The book is going pretty good so far.

The Great Gatsby

We started the first chapter of The Great Gatsby. The first chapter introduced the characters Nick, Daisy, Tom, Gatsby, and Jordan Baker. It talked about the West and East egg a little and their descriptions. We answered questions while we read and completed another assignment. The other assignment I did was finding out about mansions in different regions which was cool to see.

Worksheet

Today we got an introduction to the book we are going to start reading which is The Great Gatsby. I listened to a PowerPoint introduction about the author and background on the timeline of the book. We watched the movie trailer for The Great Gatsby which seemed very entertaining to me and I would love to learn what it is about. Then I wrote eight things I learned, three things I want to know, and two questions that I have. The book seems to be interesting and have a great plot.

Hyperboles

We read in a book about rhetorical devices and took notes. Rhetorical devices are used to bring a style to your writing. The first device we learned about was hyperbole. There are three types of ways to use hyperboles which is to make a strong point, snap attention to something, and show differences. I used two of these ways on my practice to write about some topics.
