Narrative Outlines

In class we worked on creating narrative outlines that conveyed a certain prompt. One of the prompts I chose dealt with inviting a new character into the story of The Life You Save. My character that I introduced was a Mary brat that found his journey in the Deep South. This prompt was cool to write since I made up my own idea of how the climax played out. For my 2nd prompt I will plan to do something else correlating with the story.

Questions

Today in class we continued the assignment we worked on yesterday. I got to read more of the passage but didn’t get far. I answered to questions about the 6-7 paragraph during our short period class. I want to know where the story is going because it started off on a weird foot. My day is going good.

Story

Today we went over how much the eoc will affect our grades if we are not passing right now. Then we did an assignment on narrative writing and introducing the new topic. I started reading the story but didn’t finish. I worked on the narratives while reading the story as well. I finished two narratives.

Pop Quiz

In class today we took a pop quiz on illuminate. The pop quiz was what we have been learning about argumentative writing these past couple weeks. Things like claim of fact, claim of policy, claim of value, evidence, explanations, conclusions, etc. I have learned a lot of new things about writing argumentative paragraphs and making claims that I think will be useful for the eoc in April. I scored an 85 on my pop quiz.

Peer review

In class we continued our lesson on claims and made two paragraphs out of our claims from Monday. There was an example put in canvas on how we should set our paragraphs up so I used this format to write about my claims. I stated the claim, first evidence, explanation, second evidence, explanation, then conclusion. I did this for both of my two claims then had another person peer review it. I also did a peer review on another’s student paragraphs and gave them feedback.

Claims

Today we worked on illuminate using our claims we wrote yesterday about the different topics. This time we used articles to support our claims with evidence from the text. I used the article to back up my claims with direct evidence and explained how they supported my claim. I then summarized and listed my source. I didn’t get them all done in class so I will do the rest later.

Writing Claims

In class we discussed what claims are and how to write them. We then did an example on our assignment of writing our own claims. We had to do two claims that are for and against the statement. I like this topic because it can help with writing claims for essays and other papers. I started on my assignment and will finish it later for homework.

Article

Today in class we read a little of an article about 4 year or 3 year degree programs in college. We went over the assignments claims and their meanings. The claims were kind of easy to grasp and pin with the claims in the article. We then did two examples on how to source the claims, determine which claim, and the counter it. I will finish the rest of the assignment for homework.

Block Day

Today for our block day period we had an assignment on Newsela and finish up our benchmark. I finished my benchmark during sails and turned it in. During class I completed my Newsela on an article about snoozing your alarm can cause cognitive development. The article was interesting to read and see studies from scientists who have actually done experiments to determine whether snoozing the alarm helps a person cognitive development or other effects. I then did the writing prompt and quiz attachment to the article.

Article

Today we did another assignment on Newsela. The article was about fast food places overworking teenagers, especially on school nights. The article provided many information to support their ideas and even had experiences from teens that have been overworked at jobs illegally. After I finished reading the article, I completed the prompt question and quiz on the assignment. I scored 3 out of 4 on the quiz and looked over my answer to see why I missed it.

Newsela

We worked on an article in Newsela about the future of technology. We discussed how to respond to questions that ask you to cite textual evidence and practice with some examples. I then read the article on the highschool student opinions on tech advancements. I liked the article selection because IT is a possible career field that I might go in afterschool. I then answered questions on the article on both Canvas and Newsela.

Benchmark

Today we worked on our benchmark again, the essay part. I read Franklin Roosevelt’s speech at the Congress about the Second Bill of Rights. I had to write an essay on how the Second Bill of Rights was to help citizens in the pursuit of happiness. I wrote about 4 paragraphs providing information and evidence to support my thesis. My day is great.

Benchmark

Today in class we started working on our benchmarks. This is the third and last benchmark of the semester before the eoc in April. I started on the multiple choice and kind of finished them. I still have to do written responses and essay when we come back. Hopefully it goes well and I can finish it all in time.

We Real Cool

Today in class we spoke and read about the poem We Real Cool. Before we started the lesson we talked about what’s cool and what’s not in our generation. We did this because in the poem it talks about seven boys playing pool while they should be at school. The author talks from the boys personal on how it’s cool to be doing what they’re doing. One of the overall main themes we came up with from the poem is live your life wisely and watch your actions.

Poems

Today in class everyone worked on there Jamboard poems that are due next week. I worked on mines yesterday and finished it so it could be done. My poem was a celebration relating to my African culture. I added in a lot of literary devices to make the poem really speak volume for readers. I then studied for a test I have next period for the rest of the time.
